The Prodigal Son in popular music

Very Happy Easter to one and all. Jesus Christ is alive! I’m clearly becoming more and more Anglican because I woke up thinking ‘He is risen indeed, alleluia!’

Anyway, a slightly different take for Easter Sunday by calling to attention two recent popular songs that, to me, speak heavily of Luke 15 and the Prodigal Son. Not quite an Easter theme as such, but full of good news regardless.

Firstly, pray silence for Open arms by a band called Elbow.

The whole thing is dripping with prodigal imagery, but here’s a sample of the lyrics:

So with finger rolls and folding chairs and a volley of streamers

We can be there for tweaks and repairs should you come back home

We got open arms for broken hearts like yours my boy, come home again

and, secondly, slightly more controversially perhaps, Puffy’s back in a new incarnation as Dirty Money with Coming Home:

Again, here’s a sample of the lyrics:

I’m coming home

I’m coming home

tell the World I’m coming home

Let the rain wash away all the pain of yesterday

I know my kingdom awaits and they’ve forgiven my mistakes

I’m coming home, I’m coming home

tell the World that I’m coming

So, on this Easter Sunday, watch for signs of the Kingdom… wherever you find them.
